The throat chakra, also known as the “vishuddha” chakra, is the fifth of the seven energy centers of the body. Vishuddha means “especially pure” in Sanskrit, emphasizing its main relevance: purity. The throat chakra is also known as our communication center and is linked to the themes of self-expression, integrity and truth. When we are purified, we uncover and remove all that obscures our truth and let it come through.

This energy center is associated with the color blue and is located in the throat area. It is associated with the throat, mouth, jaw, neck, ears, nose, thyroid and parathyroid.

What Does An Open Throat Chakra Look Like?

When our throat chakra is open, we are speaking from our truth as well as living in alignment with it. What goes in our mouth is important, but so is what comes out of our mouth – and perhaps it is even more so. Also, the throat chakra is not just about speaking, but our ability to listen for optimal communication with others.

And When It’s Closed?

If you have issues with any of the body parts listed, stifle speaking your truth to others around you, are not expressing your true self, or if your life is in misalignment with your truth and what your intuition tells you, you may need to focus on balancing this chakra to help bring in some healing and purifying shifts.

How To Open Your Throat Chakra

Here is a list of plant allies that can assist in opening your vishuddha chakra…

1. Blueberry

Any blue-colored food is suitable for working on the throat chakra. However, they are rare in nature. Blueberries are one of the few blue foods you will find. Not only are they delicious and healthy, but they are also known to be used in magic for protection!

2. Blackberry

The blackberry bush offers us medicine from its different parts throughout most of the year. The purplish berries are full of anti-oxidants and Vitamin C to ward off a cold. The leaves can be used in a gargle with the other herbs listed below as a gargle for a sore throat.

3. Sage

Sage is a great remedy for inflammations of the mouth and throat. Use it in the form of a strong infusion as a gargle for mouth ulcers, sore gums, and sore throats. Try having some of it as a tea, as well.

4. Thyme

Thyme is a warming and cleansing herb. It is powerfully anti-microbial, and its volatile oils are antiviral and anti-fungal. It helps remove mucus from the lungs and stimulates the immune system. Put thyme in your soup, have it as a tea with lemon and honey, or diffuse the essential oil to keep a cold away and treat a sore throat.

5. Raspberry Leaf

The leaf of this plant works similarly to blackberry leaves, only it is gentler in its astringency. Make a strong infusion and use as a gargle for sore throats, mouth ulcers and gum disease.

6. Elderberry & Elderflower

The elder is considered a most magical tree, like a healing and wise old woman. Make a delicious syrup with the berries to fight off a cold and soothe the throat, or drink elderflower tea for the same purpose. You could also enjoy fragrant and refreshing elderflower syrup with sparkling water in the summer to enjoy its benefits.

7. Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus is excellent for colds, flu, coughs and congestion. It has an energizing and refreshing scent that purifies. Use the essential oil in a diffuser for its benefits.

8. Slippery Elm

Slippery Elm is an herb that soothes inflammation. It can not only be used for soothing the digestive system, but also a sore throat. Use the lozenges for this purpose.

9. Licorice

Licorice is known for its throat-soothing properties. It also is known to be a blood cleanser and an adaptogen. Have peppermint and licorice tea to help open the throat chakra.

Also, keep in mind that any herbs or foods that assist with any of the body parts mentioned above will support the vishuddha chakra. And not only blue foods but purplish-blue foods such as purple cabbage would also help. Liquids such as water, soup, smoothies and tea are beneficial as well.
