Counting All the Way Down to Love

The numbers inside 987

Love was the ground the whole time — the descent uncovers what the ascent would have reached. 987 descends through the same three digits as 789 but arrives at love as the floor rather than the summit: what was always underneath rhythm and victory.

987 is the descending mirror of 789. Both reduce to love - but 987 arrives at love at the bottom of the descent rather than the top of the climb.
Worth holding that sentence still for a moment, because it carries the arithmetic of the sequence.
789 ascends through victory, rhythm, completion - and at the summit the three climbed-through digits add to 24, and 24 reduces to 6. The climber reaches love at the top.
987 uses the same three digits, the same arithmetic, the same 6 at the bottom of the reduction. But the digits appear in reverse order, which means the walker is not climbing.
They are descending. And what they find at the end of their descent is the same thing the climber found at the summit - but found differently.
The quiet fear people carry when they encounter 987 is that descending means losing altitude — that coming down from a completed summit is the beginning of decline. They have been at the top. They know what completion feels like.
And now something in their life is moving downward, and every instinct says downward is wrong. What they have not yet considered is that the descent is not a demotion from the summit. It is the summit's gift being carried to the place where it can actually be lived in.

What 987 means for you specifically depends on which of the 11 Life Paths you’re on. Your birthday determines that.

The Descent is not a Fall
A descent is not a demotion. It is not the undoing of a climb. A descent is what happens when a walker who has already been up high enough begins the patient movement back toward ground.
The river does not regret leaving the mountain. It is simply what a river does once it has become water at altitude. Gravity is not punishment. It is gravity.
987 describes a life that has already lived inside completion. The walker is not moving downward because something failed , they are moving downward because completion, when it is real, eventually releases a walker into the descent that follows it.
The cycle has closed. The work the completion organized has ended. The long step-down every complete thing makes when it stops requiring altitude has begun.
Completion, rhythm, victory - falling backward into the ground the victory used to rise from.

The altitude at the start
The sequence begins at 9.
Most counting journeys begin at the spark. 987 begins at the Hermit on the mountaintop, lantern already raised, the cycle already walked. The walker at the front of 987 has already been every earlier number the sequence implies - each absorbed into the body that now stands at completion.
Because the completion is real, the altitude does not need defending. The Hermit does not cling to the mountain.
He has been on the mountain long enough to know the mountain is not the point. The lantern is the point. And the lantern can be carried downward without losing its light.
987 begins with a walker who has finished something substantial and is ready, without bitterness, to come down from where the finishing left them.

The Step From Completion to Rhythm
The first step down is from 9 to 8.
On an ascending climb, 8 would come before 9 - rhythm sustained until the cycle ripens into completion. 987 reverses this. The completion is already ambient. The rhythm arrives underneath it, not as a practice still being built, but as the steady pulse the completion settles into.
A rhythm that comes after completion is the rhythm of a life that has absorbed what it was meant to absorb and has now begun, simply, to move. The lemniscate turns because it has been turning . Not because the walker is willing it to.
Because the rhythm is ambient, the sequence passes through it without pausing. 8 is the waystation between the completed altitude and the victory waiting underneath.

The Step From Rhythm to Victory
From 8 to 7. From rhythm to victory.
On an ascending journey, 7 would be the earliest of the three - the alignment earned first, the rhythm built on top of it, the completion arriving only after both. 987 flips the chronology. The victory is the last step of the descent, not the first step of the climb.
Which makes it a particular kind of victory. A victory already earned. Not a victory the walker is still reaching toward.
A victory recognized from underneath , the walker looking back and seeing, at last, that the long journey they just completed was, underneath everything, an alignment. The Chariot was being driven the whole time. The seven-pointed star was being constructed, slowly, by the walking itself.
Descent reveals this the way ascent cannot. A climber inside a 7 is too busy earning the alignment to see it as completed.
A walker who has descended into 7 from rhythm and completion sees the alignment as the shape their whole arc was quietly producing - visible now, at the bottom of the descent, because the altitude has been released.

Whether 987’s shadow side applies to you — and how strongly — depends on your core numbers. Your birthday reveals the first one.

The Arithmetic Underneath
Add the three digits.
9 + 8 + 7 = 24.
24 is the same total the climbers of 789 arrived at - the same three digits, the same hidden compound. The arithmetic does not care which direction the walker travels. It simply reports what the three highest counting numbers produce when held together.
24 is a plain compound. Not a trump - the Major Arcana closes at 21. A number that points to its own reduction.
2 + 4 = 6.
The descent, at its bottom, produces love. The hexagram, the sixth sphere on the Tree of Life, the meeting point where the upward and downward forces touch. The tending, organizing, centering kind of love that a life can finally be arranged around once the striving has ended.
A walker who begins at completion and descends through rhythm into victory does not descend into emptiness. They descend into the very thing the climb also arrived at . But approached from the opposite direction, with an entirely different relationship to it.

The Love at the Bottom of the Descent
The distinction between the two arrivals is the whole point.
The climber of 789 reaches love as the view from the summit - love as a recognition, love as the destination the climbing revealed.
The descender of 987 reaches love as the ground itself.
The arithmetic shows them love at the bottom of a descent , underneath the completion, underneath the rhythm, underneath the victory.
Love as what remains when the altitude has been released. Love as the floor the whole climb has been standing on the whole time, unseen because the climber was looking up.
This is a different kind of love, and it is felt differently by the walker who arrives at it. The climber's love is aspirational until the climb is finished. The descender's love is familial. Foundational. Already there.
The walker inside 987 is not discovering love for the first time. They are coming home to a love that was the ground before the climb began and will remain the ground long after the climbing has been forgotten.
What I want to name directly: 987 is not telling you that love is your reward for completing things. It is showing you that love was the ground the entire time — before the climb, during the climb, after the climb. The number is a mirror, not a prophecy.
You are not being guided downward by some external force. You are choosing, with the full weight of your experience, to bring what you earned at altitude back to the place where it matters most.
The descent is yours. The love at the bottom has been waiting because it was never somewhere else.

What Descended Has Been Brought Home
A walker inside 987 is often surprised by how quiet the arrival is.
The completion did not fanfare. The rhythm did not announce itself. The victory, seen from underneath, did not appear as a trophy. And the love waiting at the bottom of the descent arrives as a settling rather than a revelation.
987 is not a dramatic arc. It is a dignified one.
The arithmetic simply shows the walker where they are actually standing - at the ground floor of their own tending love, with the lantern of the Hermit now placed on a table rather than held aloft.
Whatever was achieved at the altitude has been brought down. Whatever was finished up there has been returned to the place love lives.
The descent was not a loss of elevation. It was the steady lowering of a completed life onto the floor the completion was always pointed toward.

Where the Sequence Tends to Show Up
987 tends to arrive for a walker who has quietly finished something large.
Often invisibly. The completion may be private. A chapter of a career that has fully ripened. A long inner reconstruction that has found its resolution.
A relationship phase that has absorbed everything it was meant to absorb. A version of the self that has walked its whole arc and now stands, without fanfare, at the end of what it was being.
From that finished place, the walker does not need more climbing. What they need is the long step-down - the descent that carries the completion back to the ground where love can hold it.
The arithmetic, at the bottom, delivers them to the exact place they have been quietly heading the whole time.

The Descending Staircase
Picture a staircase, three steps wide, descending.
At the top stands the Hermit. His lantern is still lit. The mountain is behind him. The cycle he walked to reach this altitude is complete, and the completion is visible in the way he holds himself - not triumphant, not weary, simply finished.
He steps down. The first step settles him into rhythm. The lemniscate he had already lived inside at altitude now moves with him as he descends . Breath steady, pulse even, the sustained pattern of a life that no longer fights itself.
He steps down again. The second step settles him into victory. A victory he has already earned and is learning to carry. A victory he is recognizing.
The alignment his whole climb produced is now visible from underneath, and he sees, at last, that the Chariot was driving the right direction the entire time.
He steps down a third time.
And here the staircase ends. The third step lowers him onto a floor that turns out not to be a basement but a room - warm, lit, waiting. At the center of the floor is the hexagram.
The sixth sphere. The tending energy at the heart of the Tree of Life. The love that has been the ground of the whole building, unseen from the altitude, now standing directly beneath his feet.
The Hermit does not need to raise his lantern anymore. The room has its own light.
He sets the lantern on a table and stands inside a love he does not have to reach for, because whatever descended has finally been brought all the way back down to where love lives.
That is 987. The descending mirror of 789. Both sequences lead to the same 6. But the climb arrives at love as the view from the top, and the descent arrives at love as the floor of the room.
The counting staircase has been walked in both directions. Up, it leads to the summit, and the summit is love. Down, it leads to the ground, and the ground is love.
Whichever way a walker travels, the arithmetic returns them to the heart , and the walker who descends arrives at a love that was quietly waiting underneath everything the climbing ever reached for.
