This is the disorientation 828 arrived to meet. And its answer is quiet, and a little humbling, and not what the question was asking for.

The 2 in the middle

The 2 at the middle of 828 is not either pulse.

It is not yours. It is not theirs. It is not some third pulse you manufactured together, either. A line between two points cannot exist if either point disappears. It is what happens between the two of you - the space where your pulse and their pulse meet.

The partnership is not made of your rhythm. The partnership is not made of their rhythm. The partnership is made of the space where the two rhythms touch.

Which means the question you arrived with is the wrong question. Neither pulse holds the partnership. Neither is supposed to. The thing you are trying to locate is not inside either of you.

It is in the territory between you, drawn by the fact that both of you are continuing to run your own rhythms in each other's presence.

Under dim light, that territory can become briefly unreadable. Not because it has disappeared. Because the light that usually lets you see it has softened.

So the arithmetic runs: two rhythms frame a connection. The connection passes through the Moon. The Moon resolves into the Hermit. And the Hermit knows something the Moon could only suggest.

The partnership is the space between the pulses.

What the Hermit sees

From the mountaintop, with the dim light finally behind him, the Hermit can see what was always true and only temporarily hard to perceive from inside the fog.

Neither rhythm was carrying the partnership. Neither was failing to carry it, either. Both were continuing to run - yours, theirs - and the partnership was the territory between them, drawn back into view every time the two pulses kept meeting.

There is no secret carrier whose identity, once uncovered, will restore some missing thing to the center. The center is not missing. It is simply rendered in a softer light right now, because a deeper layer of the partnership has risen to be seen.

The work, if there is work, is not to locate a holder. It is to accept that the two of you are inside a long rhythm of meeting, and that the meeting itself is the thing you have been calling by the name of your partnership.

Quiet landing

Return to the quiet you began inside.

You are still here. They are still here. The dim light is still dim - the Moon does not lift on command, and the passage has its own timing. But the question running underneath the quiet has begun, very gently, to change its shape.

The 8 on the left is still running. Your pulse, continuous, older than any season of the partnership, in no danger of stopping. The 8 on the right is still running too. Their pulse, just as old, just as continuous, just as unbroken.

And the 2 in the middle is what it has always been - the space between two pulses that keep meeting, which is the only place a partnership has ever actually lived.

Neither of you is holding it alone. Neither of you was ever supposed to. The ripeness coming is the plain, unspectacular knowing that the thing between you is not something either pulse contains. It is something both pulses, by continuing to run in each other's presence, keep drawing into being.

The dim light does not last. When the Moon's work is done, what you will see is the partnership you were inside the whole time - not carried by either of you, and steady anyway, because it was never meant to be carried. It was meant to be met.
