It isn’t easy being an empath.

Us highly sensitive, extra-sensory folk can often find it difficult to set healthy boundaries and stay rooted in our own energy. Without trying to, we have the (bad) habit of taking on other people’s negative energy and emotions. This ‘pollutes’ our own energy, and the knock-on effect of this can actually be physical symptoms of illness.

Did you know that many natural-born empaths and intuitives have chronic health problems?

Things like digestive issues, back problems, headaches, low energy, hormonal problems, and depression. And these have their roots in the fact that empathic people often don’t know how to set healthy energetic boundaries.

What is an Empath?

Empaths are highly sensitive, very intuitive people. They’re often labeled as “over-emotional’ when the truth is, they’re highly attuned to all emotions – not just their own.

Empaths know how other people are feeling (though this is different from feeling empathy towards someone or having a hit of intuition about them). They can not only tap into other people’s energy, quickly getting a sense of how they’re feeling, but they feel these emotions for themselves.

This is a wonderful gift if you use it right!

But when you’re unconsciously tapping into people’s energy and don’t know you’re doing it (as most empaths are) you’re ‘overloading’ your personal energy field. The result of this is to actually lower your immune response and adrenal function. Which results in fatigue, anxiety, and feelings of being completely overwhelmed.

Sounds like empaths have a pretty hard time, doesn’t’ it?!

Yet there is a lot that can be done as an empath, to protect yourself emotionally AND physically. And not only that but with some special tools and tricks, it’s possible to heal your nervous system and begin to use your empathic trait for the gifts that it is!

1. WORK ON YOUR SOLAR PLEXUS CHAKRA

This is my top tip!

If you want to invite in healing, and at the same time create a protective shield to help you in the future, you must cleanse and strengthen your third chakra.

The solar plexus chakra is the bodyguard of your entire energy field and is absolutely vital for energetic protection. So if it’s weak, it’s allowing you to absorb all sorts of negativity.

Most empaths and intuitives have a chronically weak solar plexus chakra. Yet By doing a regular chakra cleanse or meditation, you can make sure that your solar plexus chakra (and all of your other chakras) stay cleansed and balanced. IN this way, your energy stays strong and vital.

2. STAY MINDFUL OF YOUR BODY

This I learned from Eckhart Tolle, and, along with regular meditation, is one of the best ways to protect and shield yourself from unwanted energy.

Stay anchored within your own energy field by simply focusing your attention on your body, and trying, as much as you can, to always have some of your attention focused on a specific area of your body.

  • When you are speaking to someone be aware of your hands or feet.
  • When you are walking, feel your feet in your shoes, hitting the pavement with every stride.
  • When you are breathing, focus on the way your chest rises and falls.
  • When you are speaking or singing, be aware of the vibration of your own voice in your throat.

Doing these things will help to prevent your being overrun by emotions. They will help you to fend off unwanted energy, by staying rooted in the physical, especially if you’re around some other person who is emotional, or overwhelmed.

This practice of physical awareness can also help you to notice where in your own body certain emotions are stored. For example, if you absorb anger, you may begin to feel it in your chest. If you feel anxiety, it may manifest as stomach pain.

This is such vital information for your own healing journey! As you become aware of how the emotions you absorb affect your own body, you can work on better protection and healing for those areas specifically.

3. Take regular retreats

Empaths and highly empathic sensitive people need time-out. We need to regularly withdraw from the world to meditate and process our own thoughts and emotions.

Because these personality types have the often unconscious empathic abilities of ‘tap into’ other people’s thoughts and feelings, we need ways to check back in and make our feelings are our own, and not somebody else’s.

Life can get very murky and cloudy, not to mention draining, if we lack clarity around what is our stuff, and what is other people’s stuff. Don’t let this happen to you! Take regular time-outs, and practice deep self-care to stay healthy, clear and vital.
