December is here and with that brings the most beautiful time of the year.  The sense of Angels being near is heightened at the auspicious time.  Church bells ring, Christmas trees are adorned and Christmas Carols fill the airways ushering in the joy of the impending celebration.

As you know, Angels are been recognized with pivotal roles surrounding the birth of Jesus in the writings of the bible.  It is well documented that Archangel Gabriel came down to Mary to announce her pregnancy.  We see Angels depicted in nativity scenes and featured as decorations too. The beautiful Angel that sits on top of your tree is also recognition of the importance that Angels play as God’s Divine messengers of love and peace.

To get into the Christmas spirit I thought I would share some interesting facts about Christmas with you below:

1. The actual word Christmas is a contraction of Christ’s Mass in old English.

2. Archangel Gabriel is the heavenly ‘Angel of Christmas’.

3. The Christmas wreath was originally hung as a symbol of Jesus. The holly represents his crown of thorns and the red berries the blood he shed for us.

4. The three traditional colors of most Christmas decorations are red, green and gold. Red symbolizes the blood of Christ, green symbolizes life and rebirth, and gold represents light, wealth and royalty.

5. The first Christmas was celebrated on December 25, AD 336 in Rome.

6. “Silent Night” was written by an Austrian Priest Joseph Mohr in 1818.

7. St Francis of Assisi introduced Christmas Carols to formal church services.  He also introduced the Christmas crib & nativity plays to Christmas celebrations.

8. The common abbreviation for Christmas to Xmas is derived from the Greek alphabet.  X is letter Chi, which is the first letter of Christ’s name in the Greek alphabet.

9. The 26th of December was traditionally known as St Stephens Day but is more commonly known as Boxing Day.  The expression came about as during the festive season money was collected in aims-boxes placed in churches. After Christmas, the money was distributed to the poor & needy.

10. Angels play an important role in Christmas celebrations.  Angels feature in many Christmas Carols such as Hark the Herald Angels Sing, Gabriel’s message, Angels from the realms of glory, Angels we have heard on high & the Angel’s song.  Angels feature in nativity scenes, Christmas decorations & on Christmas cards.

11. Tinsel was invented in 1610 in Germany and was once made of real silver.

12. Christmas is celebrated to represent the ‘spirit of giving’ which is why so many gifts are purchased and exchanged on Christmas Day.  Gifts are shared to symbolize the gifts given to Jesus by the three wise men.

Before I close, I would just like to share this poem which may help some of you this Christmas who are missing loved ones.

‘Christmas in Heaven’

I see countless Christmas Trees around the world below with tiny lights

Like Heaven’s stars reflecting everywhere

The sight is so spectacular, please wipe away the tears

For I am spending Christmas in Heaven this year

Hear the many Christmas songs that people hold so dear,

but the sounds of music can’t compare with the Christmas choir here.

I have no words to tell you the joy their voices bring it is beyond description to hear the Angels sing.

I know how much you miss me I see the pain in your heart

But I am not so far away we really aren’t apart

So be happy for me loved ones You know I hold you dear

Be glad I’m spending Christmas in Heaven this year.

I send you each a special gift from my Heavenly home above

I send you each a memory of my undying love

Please remember love’s a gift more precious than pure gold.

Please love and keep each other, have a Merry Christmas and wipe away that tear

Remember I am spending Christmas in Heaven this year.
