Are You and Your Money BFFs?
It is the month of Taurus, that wonderful zodiac sign that governs all things green. Living where I do in the Northern Hemisphere May is one of my favorite months of the year as the exquisite abundance of nature begins to make itself known and abundance on all levels of life becomes possible.
So why is money often such a difficult issue?
Money is never just money.
What does that mean?
Money, unlike some other aspects of life, often carries a lot of ancestral belief, experience and emotion. You and I inherit our beliefs and feelings about money, absorbing as children what the adults around us experience; and that makes it difficult to separate the energy of money from perceived realities of abundance or lack.
“Money doesn’t grow on trees.”
I don’t know how many times I heard those words as a child, usually whenever I asked for something. By the time I was an adult the belief that money was a scarce resource was well-entrenched. But money is not a scarce resource – money is energy and just like anything else it is your relationship to it that matters.
Just like you can have healthy or unhealthy relationships with other people, you can have a healthy or unhealthy relationship with money. And just like with people a healthy relationship with money has to do with boundaries.
When I was younger money used to slip through my fingers like water. As fast as I made it I found ways to spend it; and not just on myself. I was very generous with my money, part of a pattern I had developed that had me over-giving in many areas of my life. I did not have good boundaries when it came to giving and receiving and that pattern extended to how I handled (or didn’t handle) my money.
That pattern got me into a lot of difficulty in many ways including financially. I learned through that process that I wasn’t really looking at my money as something to be respected and managed. Just as I would ignore behaviors I had that weren’t serving me I was ignoring my money; and if you ignore something long enough it will go away and find someone who will pay attention!
So I want to invite you to make money your BFF (Best Friend Forever!) and here are three simple ways you can do that.
3 Ways To Become BFFs With Your Money
1) Write down every statement you can remember hearing from your parents, teachers or even in the news about money.
Keep going until you have unearthed everything you truly believe about money and your ability to have all the money you want and need. Think about the people in your family and what they experienced around money. My parents for example grew up in the time of the Great Depression here in the U.S. so their experiences and beliefs around money were filled with fear and lack. And while their experiences were difficult I carried those same beliefs forward into a world very different from the one they lived in.
Find out what those hidden and not so hidden beliefs are and start working to change them. What do you believe about wealth and poverty? What preconceived ideas might you hold about rich or poor people? Your judgments about others will tell you a lot about your own relationship to money and abundance.
2) Review your own life and see if you can remember times in your life when money was flowing easily and times when it was not.
What was going on in your life at those times? Realize that times where money was flowing for you were also times where your energy and focus facilitated the movement of financial flow. So see if you can step into that persona again and capture the joy of being financially abundant. Just doing that will send a powerful message to the universe and get the Law of Attraction working in your favor.
3) Expand your definition of abundance and realize you already have all that you need.
This is true in any given moment when you remember you are a being of love and light. In that moment of remembrance, there is nothing lacking. So to attract more and more abundance be grateful for what you already have. Be grateful that you have money to pay the bills. Be grateful for the bills. Be grateful for the sunshine, the grass, the flowers, or a hug from someone you love. Be grateful. Be grateful. Be grateful.
When you shift your energy, everything shifts around you. So shift your energy and step into the energy of abundance and soon your money will shift more positively as well. It cannot help but do that.
To your abundance!
