Tarot CardsPinWhere the Magician takes action the High Priestess turns inward for intuitive guidance & guiding wisdom.

In our ongoing study of the tarot, today we’ll have a look at the 3rd Major Arcana, called the High Priestess. Although it is the 3rd card, the High Priestess is the Number 2. This is because the 1st (and some argue, the last as well) Major Arcana is zero – the Fool.

The High Priestess stands as compliment and contrast to the Magician. Where the former represents an archetype of action and alchemical change, the intuitive Priestess represents the ability to turn inward and divine wisdom and truth from transe states, meditation or ancient, oracular knowing.

Pythons, Greeks and Oracles

If you are familiar with ancient Greek mythology, you’ve probably heard about the Oracle at Delphi. People from all over the known world would make pilgrimages to this site in order to ‘consult the oracle’. And how did they consult it? By meeting with a Priestess.

The Delphi Priestesses were called Pythoness. And it was their job to sit in transe states and receive answers to pilgrims’ queries.

The High Priestess and You

When the High Priestess comes up in a tarot spread, it indicates the power of turning inward in order to find the answers you seek. And while in times of old, people made their way to a Pythoness for sacred guidance, in today’s world, we all have the capacity to access our Divine Guidance through quieting the mind, stilling the heart and listening deeply to our inner truth.

Still, there may be times when ‘consulting the oracle’ is exactly what is recommended when the High Priestess shows up in a tarot spread. If you are conducting the reading yourself, it may be an indicator to get a 2nd opinion from an intuitive counsellor of some kind. Whereas if you are receiving your reading from a modern-day pythoness, it may be suggesting that you develop your own intuition or psychic abilities.

The Best Answers

The High Priestess suggests that the very best answers for your life come not from external sources, but from your own capacity to connect with Divine Guidance and Wisdom.

How do you find the answers to life’s most puzzling questions? Where do you turn when you need to make a major life decision? Numerology, of course, is one excellent resource. Tarot, Astrology and the intuitive information gathered during states of meditation or transe are also very reliable. Which way/s do you prefer?
