3 Ways to Calm Down Before You Blow Your Cool!

3 ways to calm downPinThe Northern Hemisphere may be “heating up” right now, but hot-heads can be found at any latitude, in any season.

Let’s face it, there are times in life when frustration or anger get the best of us. But rather than berate ourselves for our urge to blow a gasket, why not take a few steps to cool down before your inner Mt. Pele spews molten lava on the people you love? Check out these 3 simple ways you can “cool your jets” quickly …

Cool Tip #1: Body Glove of Self Love

Sometimes it’s excess mind chatter that gets us spinning into negative thought. We can turn things over and over in our minds, thinking of all the reasons why we are right, or why we’ve been wronged. We practice argument scenes in our head, telling off the one who done us wrong.

The problem is, this doesn’t work. They only person who suffers from these imaginary encounters between our ears is US. So the next time you find that monkey mind chattering away about something that makes YOU feel like crap, simply wrap yourself in an imaginary “body glove” called “self love.”

Here’s how you do it: Literally see yourself wrapped by the words “I love you.” Put your hand on your heart, close your eyes and say it out loud: “I love you, I love you, I love you.”

I know this sounds corny, but I’m telling you – it works! There’s something about soothing yourself in this way that calms down the nervous system (and that chattering mind) very very quickly.

Cool Tip #2: “Write it on the Ice!”

My grandmother used to tell me this when I complained about pointless things. What she meant was to put my complaint somewhere where it had the greatest possibility of (literally) melting away.

Now I’m not saying that anger, frustration or other painful feelings aren’t justified. What I AM suggesting though is that, rather than keep them bottled up or dump them on a loved one who deserves better, get the intensity out of you first.

Whether that’s scribbling mean words in a journal, bashing pillows around, or literally carving your anger in ice, try this first before you jump to confrontation or blurt out things you might regret later.

Cool Tip #3: Laugh!

Finding the humor in a frustrating situation can diffuse a lot of negative, pent-up emotions. Now I realize that laughter can not work in the face of tragedy. Tragedy and trauma require professional support. But when life’s annoying frustrations start to get to you, finding the funny can go a long way to freeing you from a marriage to misery.
